Hamstring-to-Quad Strength: Why the Right Balance Matters for Runners
Runners often focus on building stronger quads—and for good reason. Your quadriceps help absorb load as you land, control your knee, and generate force every time you push off the ground. But strong quads need equally capable hamstrings behind them.
The hamstring-to-quadriceps (H) strength ratio compares the force your hamstrings can produce with the force of your quads. Traditionally, a ratio of about 0.60—meaning hamstrings produce at least 60% of quad strength—has been used as a general reference point. For runners and other athletes who regularly move at speed, we often want to see a more balanced picture, especially when looking at eccentric hamstring strength: the hamstring’s ability to control lengthening under load.
A ratio closer to 1:1 may be a useful performance goal for some highly trained athletes, but it is not a universal benchmark every runner must chase. Your ideal strength profile depends on your training history, injury history, running goals, total strength, and how your body handles load.
Why do hamstrings matter so much for runners?
During the late swing phase of running—just before your foot contacts the ground—your hamstrings work eccentrically as powerful brakes. They help slow the lower leg, support knee control, and prepare your body to accept force at landing.
When the quads significantly overpower the hamstrings, runners may have less control through this phase of the stride. That imbalance can contribute to inefficient force transfer and may increase stress on the knee and hamstring tissues, particularly during speed work, hills, fatigue, or sudden increases in training volume.
Balanced strength can support:
Running economy: A strong, coordinated posterior chain helps runners control each stride efficiently rather than wasting energy with excess movement or braking.
Hamstring resilience: Adequate eccentric hamstring strength is especially important for sprinting, fast finishes, hills, and return-to-running after a strain.
Knee stability: The hamstrings help resist forward movement of the shin relative to the thigh, working alongside other muscles and structures to support the knee.
More durable training: Strengthening both sides of the thigh can help runners tolerate the demands of mileage, workouts, and uneven terrain.
The ratio is helpful—but it is not the whole story
A hamstring-to-quad ratio is one piece of the puzzle, not a diagnosis or a guarantee against injury. A “good” ratio can be misleading if both muscle groups are weak. For example, a runner recovering from a knee injury may have a seemingly favorable ratio simply because their quad strength has dropped significantly.
We also want to consider side-to-side differences, hip and calf strength, mobility, running mechanics, training load, and symptoms. For runners, the functional relationship between eccentric hamstring strength and concentric quad strength may be more meaningful than a single traditional ratio alone.
That is why testing matters. An objective strength assessment with a physical therapist can provide much more useful information than comparing leg-curl and leg-extension weights at the gym.
How runners can build better balance
Many runners already get plenty of quad work from running itself—especially with hills, stairs, and downhill running. Hamstrings often need more intentional training.
Useful exercises may include Romanian deadlifts, single-leg deadlifts, hip bridges, hamstring sliders, and progressive Nordic hamstring work. The right exercises, load, and progression should match your current strength level and injury history. If you are dealing with knee pain, a recent hamstring strain, or persistent trouble with speed work, avoid jumping into advanced eccentric exercises without guidance.
